By Tom Sangers

In the winter, one of the best things you can do to treat yourself is take a little break away from the hustle of everyday life. Even if it’s just a short break for the weekend, having a change of scenery can be vital to your mind, body and spirit during the long, gloomy days that are so often seen in the UK during the winter season.

Why not make the most of the bargains this time of year and take a weekend break and go to North Devon? You certainly won’t be disappointed as there are so many things to do and see and the whole area is a great place to visit no matter what time of year you go. Many people think that the weather will be far too harsh and that there isn’t much point of going on a break that time of year. However North Devon is usually much milder than a lot of other places in the UK. North Devon is situated in the South West of England and means that the mild climate allows for cooler summers and warmer winters. The area occasionally experiences some cold snaps, but these are very uncommon and usually don’t last for long. Mostly the weather is calm and mild, and it’s a great place to get away for a few days in the week or on the weekend.

Another good reason to get away during the winter is not so much about the weather itself but impact the long stretches of cold and gloomy weather that can make a person feel down. The winter months allows people to spend too much time travelling back and forth, to and from work without seeing much daylight at all. A change of scenery usually can help lift your spirits and return you to work feeling refreshed and ready for action. Just the chance to get away and do anything different can really boost peoples self esteem let alone their motivation. It’s proving a cost effective way for people to unwind as a hot alternative can prove to be an expensive way to revitalize.

North Devon won’t break the bank and can be very cost effective. Due to it not being that expensive will mean that you will get more for your money. You can go there for the weekend for a surprisingly small amount of money, especially in the winter months during the off peak seasons.

The area provides a lot of great attractions and many areas of natural beauty to enjoy. Depending on the time of year you visit will depend in what’s in store for you but any time of the year won’t disappoint. So treat yourself to a weekend break in a Hotel in North Devon and allow yourself to unwind and relax in a warm and comforting fashion that you deserve. If you are looking for somewhere that extra special then try a Woolacombe Hotel.

Ever fancied a spooky weekend looking for ghosts in a real haunted hotel? These hotels in Devon have all had supernatural sightings reported.

1) Chambercombe Manor, Ilfracombe

One of Britain’s most famous haunted houses, Chambercombe Manor was featured in the Living TV series ‘Most Haunted’. It has long been reported to be haunted by the ghost of Lady Jane Grey.

Spookier still, in 1865, a tenant noticed a window outline that did not correspond to a room inside the building. When they investigated they found a small sealed room containing a bedstead with a skeleton in it. The skeleton is believed to have been a titled lady visiting relatives at Chambercombe who was shipwrecked in a storm on the rocks at Hele. When she later died in the room, the occupants of the Manor took her jewellery and sealed her in. A section of the partition has now been removed so that visitors can see into the chamber.

Chambercombe Manor hosts guided tours, paranormal events, overnight paranormal nights and murder mysteries. Holiday accommodation is available in luxury cottages.

2) The Devil’s Stone Inn, Shebbear

The Devil’s Stone Inn has a certificate in the bar to prove it has been officially inspected and recognised as one of the eight most haunted pubs in the UK.

The bedrooms and bathrooms are said to be haunted by the ghost of a little girl aged around seven years old. Sometimes seen with a grey bearded man thought to be her father, she is said to be a friendly ghost, and has ‘appeared’ on request in the bar, by moving coats and closing doors. She is also blamed for pictures falling off the walls.

The pub itself is a former farmhouse which was converted into a coaching inn in the 17th century. It is named after the Devil’s Stone, a large glacial rock on the village green, which is said to imprison the Devil underneath it. Following local tradition, the village bellringers turn the stone over every year at 8pm on Guy Fawkes Night (5th November) to protect the village from disaster. Once the stone has been turned, the celebrations begin in the Devil’s Stone Inn.

Local legend claims there is also a hidden tunnel connecting the Devil’s Stone Inn to the church.

3) The Royal Castle Hotel, Dartmouth Quay

The Royal Castle Hotel has played host to Queen Victoria, Edward VII, Sir Francis Drake and Cary Grant, as well as providing a home for several of King Charles II’s mistresses.

At 2am on autumn mornings, a ghostly coach and horses can be heard arriving, taking
on a passenger and driving away. This phantom coach is said to date from the time of King William and Queen Mary’s arrival from the Netherlands in 1688. The Queen arrived first and stayed at the Royal Castle Hotel, which was then two pairs of houses with a narrow courtyard in between. The King was forced by a storm to land in Torbay instead of Dartmouth, and a coach was sent to fetch Queen Mary, arriving at the Royal Castle Hotel shortly before 2am.

Ever since then, staff and guests at the hotel in the autumn have reported hearing horses’ hooves crossing cobblestones, a carriage door opening and closing, followed by the crack of a whip, the chimes of a long-gone clock, and the horses whinnying as they speed the coach away.

4) The Lord Haldon Hotel, Dunchideock, near Exeter

A large country hotel which has hosted many aristocratic guests, the Lord Haldon Hotel has had many reports of ghosts.

The most tragic story is that of an eighteenth century servant girl who appears to be distressed and dripping with water. Locals believe she became pregnant by a man of higher social standing, and was murdered in the lake to avoid a scandal.

A more mysterious ghost, seen several times, is a large man with rolled up sleeves. He appears by the frosted windows in the back of the old lounge, next to what used to be the stables, and when his outline is seen through the windows, his height matches the previous floor level.

Another unexplained ghost is a young girl who knocks on guests’ doors and calls out their first names in the early hours, between 1 and 3 in the morning. Guests and staff have also heard sounds of footsteps when nobody is there.

5) The Royal Clarence Hotel, Exeter Cathedral Yard

Built on the site of the explorer Sir Walter Raleigh’s fathers’ house, the Royal Clarence Hotel is the beginning and end point of Exeter’s Red Coat guided Ghosts and Legends Tours. It is claimed to be home to three friendly ghosts, one of which may be Sir Walter Raleigh himself. Famous visitors to the Royal Clarence Hotel have included Lord Nelson, Nicholas I, Czar of Russia, the author Thomas Hardy, and Hollywood actors Clark Gable and Gary Cooper.

Queen Victoria’s father, the Duke of Kent, travelled to Exeter to receive the freedom of the city, but died while staying in Sidmouth on 23rd January 1820. His body was transported to the Royal Clarence and embalmed there before transportation to his funeral in Windsor.

Haunting manifestations include coughing sounds on the top floor, which some have claimed to be the ghost of Sir Walter Raleigh. A grey lady ghost has also been seen looking out of a window.

Another part of the Royal Clarence Hotel is the Well House Tavern, which has a crypt in the basement with a skeleton, believed to have been a victim of the plague.

While visiting Exeter Cathedral Green, you might also keep an eye out for a monk, a nun, a three headed man and a tall glowing figure, who are all reported to haunt that area: it’s not surprising people say that Exeter is one of the most haunted cities in Britain!

Okehampton – Devon is noted for the mysterious majestic remains of the Okehampton castle dating back to the Norman era, as well as newer parts of the castle which was built around the fourteenth century.

Henry the VIII destroyed this castle as well as executing in Earl who lived there in 1538. The Lady Howard who resided there was known to marry very wealthy men and then in turn she murdered them and as legend states her ghost still travels on a coach made from human bones pulled by black dog with eyes that flame.

In the south of Okehampton you will find the virgin village of Lydford which is noted for its magnificent castle and gorge. This town was very noted in the Dark Ages when King Alfred fought against the Celts and Danes. The Castle was built during the Norman period combined with the dark dungeon which was a prison court and was filled with those who broke the law, as well as mindless torture of those who had hot molten spooned down their throats.

The 15th century church of St Petrock holds a beautiful grave yard where many of the prominent lords and ladies are buried. There is a walk you can take through the spectacular riverside of the White Lady Waterfall witnessing the swirling river which washes into the Devil’s Cauldron, a dingy place collecting the white foam into peaks.

The extraordinary Brent Tor which houses the Church of St Michael on the edge of Dartmoor which is a volcanic tor, and is also extremely weather beaten and forgotten was built in 1630. There are very high and thick walls which were erected to protect the grounds from the lashing seas.

Many of the old coaching inns are still in existence and depict the importance of the staging posts between London and Cornwell, and today it is lined by rail. Dartmoor exhibits heritage and local art as well as its ever long history. There is now a prestige golf course set in the beautiful woodlands for avid golfers.

Just behind Okehampton in Dartmoor you will witness the exhilarating peaks decorated with granite weathered tors which is all that is left to tell the tales of the mountains which existed millions of years ago. This is really magnificent and a must to visit.

Okehampton – Devonshire is a must to visit, frequenting the down town shops and markets, and enjoying the local hospitality and their superb cuisine which you can enjoy in one of the many pubs downtown.

With a Family Break at holiday parks, everybody gets to have a brilliant time. It is a place of comfort, fine food and recreation. We can spend precious time with the people we love, sharing unforgettable experiences and relaxing in pleasant atmosphere.

Holiday parks will allow you to design your short break around what makes your family tick. Holiday parks are often set away from the busy, noisy, tourist filled resorts in the heart of the countryside. A stay in a holiday park can be an extremely relaxing, laid back holiday for those guests who wish to stay onsite and explore the local area.

Often holiday parks are situated within driving distance of several main resorts giving guests the perfect opportunity to go exploring during the day and return to a tranquil, base of operations at night!

Holiday Parks Devon

East Devon countryside is home to pretty seaside towns, villages, resorts and valleys.
Devon villages are built from stone mined from Beer’s unique quarry caves, local sandstone, chert and flint, cob and thatch, plus popples which are water-smooth pebbles. Devon holidays have long been popular and tourism, along with dairy farming, are now the premier industries, leading to a stunning landscape that is a patchwork of green fields.

The coastal areas offer a wide range of water sports including windsurfing, jet skiing, boating and fishing. Swimming in Devon is of course popular and many beaches provide lifeguard cover. Waterside Holiday Park offers you the opportunity to live your dream.

There are plenty of websites that will help you to guide through holiday parks in Devon.

Ladram Bay overlooks the now famous Jurassic Coast from the countryside of East Devon. With its varied landscapes and activities, this makes for a perfect holiday venue for both young and old. Come and enjoy your stay in one of our caravans or perhaps with a relaxing camping holiday.

Devon and Cornwall offer the visitor an amazing selection of adventure parks.

Cornwall

Located in Helston, Flambards features some of Britain’s wildest theme park rides. With year-round entertainment and lots of indoor and outdoor activities for all ages, as well as the famous Victorian Village and loads of places to eat, Flambards rightly boasts it is ‘the best day of the week’.

Brocklands Adventure Park, a family-run Fun Park at Kilkhampton, near Bude has excellent facilities for the whole family and is open all year. As well as a new four lane, top-of-the-range ten-pin bowling alley adjoining the restaurant, it has an archery centre, crazy golf and a mega tube slide.

Paradise Park, in Hayle, was voted Cornwall’s Attraction of the Year in 2000. There is plenty for families at this colourful place, which is also the headquarters of the World Parrot Trust. The Park is set around a Victorian walled garden and features tropical plants which thrive in Cornwall’s mild climate. You can explore the Parrot Jungle, Australian Aviary and Otter Sanctuary. After the penguin feeding shows, why not head off with the kids to the Fun Farm or adventure play area, or, if it’s a bit wet, try the JungleBarn indoor play centre?

Devon

Across the border in North Devon, you should set a course for the Milky Way Adventure Park near Bideford for an alien encounter or explore the dark dungeon labyrinth at Waterford Castle near Ilfracombe. And of course you will have to tell your friends you went to the ‘BIG Sheep’. Situated in Abbotsham, this is the perfect all-weather attraction for family days out. It’s fun and educational, and has a great balance of indoor and outdoor shows and attractions to suit all ages… look out for the BIG Sheep Grand National in April.

On the road to Dartmouth in South Devon, Woodlands is set in 80 acres and is home to the UK’s biggest indoor play centre. Outside, there are great family rides, such as the Cyclone Watercoasters, the Tornado Toboggan, bumper boats and dune buggies, as well as the farm and falconry displays. To make the most of all the fun, you should stay and play – ask about their award-winning Caravan and Camping Park.

Right on the beach at Goodrington near Paignton, is QuayWest Waterpark. This hosts eight slides, two kiddies pool areas, a swimming pool and various food and retail shops. With the steam train passing one side and the sea the other, it is a unique way to spend the day in Torbay.

Paignton Zoo Environmental Park is a registered education and scientific charity dedicated to conserving our global wildlife heritage. Easily accessible by local bus, Paignton Zoo is home to thousands of amazing animals and plants where you can visit the desert, cross the savannah, explore the forest and trek through the tropics. It’s a great day out for everyone.

For guaranteed fun, you can experience a Crealy Adventure Theme Park in both Devon and Cornwall. Situated near Clyst St. Mary near Exeter and at Tredinnick, near Padstow on the North Cornwall coast, the two sites offer everyone a fantastic fun experience… and with the biggest undercover areas of any family attraction in Devon and Cornwall, as they say, regardless of the weather, you’ll have a ‘Crealy Great Time’.

Visit Crealy Adventure Park in Devon and Cornwall for ‘Maximum Fun Guaranteed!’ Permission is granted to publish this article electronically provided that a working hyperlink remains to our website.

If you’re fond of historical romances and devour tales of knights and royals in ancient English history, Devon and Cornwall should be familiar names to you. Today, Devon and Cornwall are popular must-see places for tourists travelling to England. Here are some of the reasons why.

1. Excellent Coastline: The coastline of Devon and Cornwall extends from Land’s End’s wave-battered granite to the sandstone cliffs of East Devon and the soaring hills of North. This stretch of coast is the longest in England and offers a stunning array of fishing villages, creeks and cosmopolitan resorts. The long stretches of sandy beach and rolling waves are popular havens for surfers and bathers.

2. Beautiful Countryside: The unspoilt landscape of the rolling greens of the Blackdown Hills is dotted with charming, sleepy villages. If you are fond of countryside activities such as walking, horse riding, and cycling, Devon’s rustic charms are sure to please.

3. Full-service Accommodations: Finding a good place to stay while visiting Devon and Cornwall is never a problem. There are plenty of choices guaranteed to suit the needs and budget of any traveller. The Canyon Bay Hotel which offers a stunning view of the St. Austell Bay and the Budock Vean Golf and Country House Hotel which boasts of a nine-hole, 18-tee course that offers a panoramic view of the Helford River, are two of the best samples of accommodation options in Devon and Cornwall.

4. Helpful Tourist Information Centres: You are sure to find all that you need and more at various tourist information centres in Devon and Cornwall. From booking your trip to travel timetables, these information centres can assist you with your information needs. They also have employees who speak various languages making communication easy.

5. King Arthur. If you are fond of ancient myths and legends, you are sure to be excited to visit the remains of Kung Arthur’s castle at Tintagel. Travellers can also visit Slaughterbridge, the place where King Arthur fought Mordred or Dozmary Pool, the seat of his famous sword, Excalibur.

6. A Variety of Activities: Travellers can enjoy walking along stretches of sandy beaches or surf the waves along the length of Devon and Cornwall’s coastline. The coastline allows a variety of activities for visitors to take advantage of. And. if you prefer the beauty of the countryside, you can visit a few of the many sleepy towns and villages on horseback.

7. Famous Gardens: Devon and Cornwall are home to some of the world’s famous gardens that hold a variety of plant life in vibrant and colourful combinations. Many of these gardens are located at historic houses and stately mansions that have many stories to tell themselves.

8. Food and Drink: Because you are never far from the sea or the greenery of the rolling hills, excellent choices for even the most discriminating palates abound in Devon and Cornwall. Visitors can enjoy a sumptuous meal of seafood at the variety of seaside cafes and bistros or sample a blend of the local cheeses washed down with chilled wine from local vineyards.

9. Great People: Locals at Devon and Cornwall have a deep respect for their land. They take as much pride in the scenic beauty of their country as they do in their enduring myths and tales of greatness. Visitors are usually amazed at the warmth and welcoming atmosphere and the willingness to share what is theirs with others.

10. Year-round Holiday: Regardless of the season, Devon and Cornwall’s charm endures. Winters are as fascinating and as enjoyable as the springs or the summers. The generally mild climate ensures that Devon and Cornwall is always bustling with life.

Get a bargain on your family holiday this year. Devon's holiday parks offer great facilities, entertainment and convenient locations at bargain prices. But by knowing where to look, you can get special offers and discounts on top of the holiday park prices.

Get a bargain on your family holiday this year. Devon holiday parks offer great facilities, entertainment and convenient locations at bargain prices.

But by knowing where to look, you can get special offers and discounts on top of the holiday park prices.

1) Check the New Year papers for cut-price holiday offers

Look out for headlines promoting £10 and £20 holidays in the New Year papers. Many of the regional and nationwide British papers publish discount holiday offers in the New Year, which are often cut price bargain breaks at selected holiday parks throughout the UK.

So keep an eye on the papers after Christmas and in the first couple of weeks of January.

You’ll need to collect a series of tokens to send in with your preferred choices of date and location, and the sooner you can start the better, because popular choices will soon be filled up.

2) Look out for competitions on holiday park websites

Some holiday park websites have competitions where you can win a free holiday in exchange for signing up for a brochure and answering some questions.

It may be a long shot, but what is there to lose? After all, you don’t win if you don’t enter.

3) Check for discount codes on travel websites.

Discount codes are often temporary, so new codes could appear at any time. They may offer discounts on a specific holiday park they are promoting, longer or shorter holidays, or breaks at a particular time of year.

You may find you get a great deal on a mini-break, or a resort you might not have looked at before. So why not give it a try – you could be pleasantly surprised.

4) Choose off-season dates for your holiday

If your children aren’t school-age yet, you can save a lot of money by avoiding the school holidays and going on holiday in the off-peak season.

Going a week or two on either side of the school holidays doesn’t make that much difference to the weather, but when prices can be hundreds of pounds lower, it can save a lot on your budget.

So if you have younger children, make the most of it while you can.

5) Look for Private Caravan Rentals

Many caravan parks also sell static caravans, which the owners will often rent out when they aren’t using them, at cheaper prices than the caravans owned by the holiday park.

Listings for these privately owned caravans can often be found in classified advert listings or auction websites.

If your timing is lucky with the auction listings, or you find a late deal due to cancellation, you can even get a last minute bargain on private caravan rentals.

6) Camp in your own tent or campervan

Some holiday parks allow visitors to stay in their own campervans or camp in tents instead of renting a static caravan.

So if you do have your own tent or campervan, you can bring your own accommodation and save on your holiday budget.

It may be a bit more work when you’re arriving and packing up, but once you’ve got your things set up, you’ll be able to have just as much fun using the holiday park’s facilities, beaches, shops and entertainment.

Visit Stairway to Devon to find holiday parks in Devon, or look here to find late deals on holidays in Devon. If you’re planning to go on holiday in a campervan, look into campervan insurance, to make sure that holiday stays cheap.

Dartmoor is located in the British county of Devon. Its name is comprised of two words. Moor refers to the type of land which is boggy short grassland on granite upland rock. Dart refers to the River Dart which has two tributaries that join at Dartmeet. The river is the principal river that runs through Dartmoor although the moor is characterized by the many rivers that run through it.

Dartmoor is a conservation area and is protected by the Dartmoor National Park Authority. Dartmoor falls under the civic governorship of Devon County Council. Over 50% of Dartmoor is still owned privately by the Duke of Cornwall. It has been their ancestral land since the Duchy was created.

Dartmoor is largely uninhabited space that is rich and diverse in wildlife. Commonly referred to as The Moors, Dartmoor is a particularly favourite haunt of hikers and campers. Due to the many rivers on the moor, it is also a popular place for water activities such as canoeing, kayaking and fishing. The rivers are traditional sources of trout and salmon.

Dartmoor does have a resident population but it is sparsely populated and the communities are mostly farming villages and homesteads. Many of the farm buildings are built from locally sourced granite stones and some date back to the medieval era. Those who are not engaged in farming or other local industries such as clay mining, are employed by the tourist industry. Dartmoor attracts thousands of people every year and there are many guesthouses and curiosity shops that cater to them.

Dartmoor plays an important role in Britain’s national security. The Ministry of Defense have used the moors for firing ranges since the early 1800′s. Dartmoor is also home to Britain’s most notorious high security prison. The prison is reputed to be escape proof and many high profile convicts have been held there over its 500 year history.
